Uploading videos

Before importing a video, it must first be uploaded to an account on either YouTube or Vimeo, where it must be set to allow embedding on external sites. How to do this is different on these two sites:

First log in to the account you wish to use. Editors with access, may use the Webmaster-account for Visitnorway, but others must use their own accounts. Then, go to Vimeo’s upload page. This page will look something like this:

Now select the video you wish to use, and fill in the various fields while it is being uploaded. Depending on the video. you might have to wait for it to be additionally encoded before you can proceed. While the video is uploading, however, the window should look like this:

Once the video is uploaded, press the «Edit settings» button, and apply the required settings to the video.

Once the settings are applied and saved, you can go back to the beginning and upload another video, or go to the CMS and import it.

To achieve the best quality, the bitrate of the original video file should be between 10 000 and 20 000 bps and in FullHD (1920×1080 progressive, also known as 1080p). You might have to activate this by going to the «Video File» menu and selecting «Upgrade this video».

More information is found in Vimeo’s video compression guidelines.

Please note that the settings to apply will depend on what rights to use we have for each particular video. For instance, if a video is only to be shown on Visitnorway and not on Vimeo, it must be set to «anyone» when importing it into the CMS, and then altered to «Hide this video from Vimeo.com» once this is done.

If a video is to be visible on Vimeo, it must have credits in English for both the video and the sound. It should also have a description in English. You should also include relevant links to Visitnorway for more information.

Remember also to fill in the information on the basic tab.

Uploading videos to YouTube is more or less the same as to Vimeo, but with a slightly different dialog. Begin by logging in to your account. As with Vimeo, editors with access to Visitnorway’s Webmaster account may use this.
